Wordless Wednesday: Shelf Fungi

Shelf Fungi

Almost wordless: An indication that this tree is not well. The fungi will only grow if the tree is rotting inside.

Ever since childhood I’ve been fascinated by the shapes and colors of fungi. What a fantastic shot!

It looks beautiful even if it’s a bad sign. Did you take this just recently? Fungi are usually an autumn thing, aren’t they?

This is from last week. I’m not sure if fungi have a season. I see them growing on rotting wood almost year round.

Oh, I see. I thought they’re a kind of mushrooms so only around in the autumn. My mistake!

It is a type of mushroom, and you probably see more of them in autumn because they’ve had all summer to grow. I’m going to take a guess and say the one I saw is fairly young… on the outside of the tree anyway. Fungi are like icebergs, there is a lot that we can’t see growing under the bark.

Now I’m curious and will have to back in a few weeks and see how big it gets over the summer!

Yes, I’d be interested to know how/if it grows any larger.
