Mailbox Monday ~ January 22nd

Welcome to Mailbox Monday, created by Marcia of To Be Continued, a place where readers share the books that came in their mailbox during the last week.

After several years of being on tour with different blogs as the monthly host, the Mailbox Monday Blog is now the permanent home for the meme.

This was not a very productive week. I have been sick with the flu and haven’t felt like doing much of anything. I did manage to get some reading done and finished a few books . . . but not much else.

I downloaded a couple of new audiobooks, both of which I have been eagerly awaiting.

New Arrivals

The Gone World by Tom Sweterlitsch from Penguin Audio.

Inception meets True Detective in this science-fiction thriller of spellbinding tension and staggering scope. The Gone World follows a special agent into a savage murder case with grave implications for the fate of mankind.

How to Stop Time by Matt Haig from Penguin Audio.

A love story across the ages – and for the ages – about a man lost in time, the woman who could save him, and the lifetimes it can take to learn how to live.

Weekend Cooking: One Sheet Eats

100+ Delicious Recipes All Made on a Baking Sheet

Publisher: Oxmoor House
Publish Date: October 2017
Format: Paperback | 256 pages

Forget all other pots, pans, and baking dishes! Each of the 100+ recipes contained in the enclosed cookbook require only one type of bakeware or cookware—a baking sheet. One Sheet Eats is dedicated to simplifying home cooking. (Because who doesn’t want to make meal prep easier?) By using a baking sheet (sometimes two) and a few prep items found in most kitchens such as mixing bowls, a blender, a microwave, and a wire rack, anyone can make delicious, flavorful, and filling dishes for lunch, dinner, and even snack time and dessert.

Recipes crafted for simple, clutter-free, and satisfying cooking

With a book titled One Sheet Eats, I expected to find mostly simple, easy to create, everyday meals. Instead, I found a collection of unique and different recipes. The book includes a variety: Appetizers, entrees, sides, snacks, pizzas, and desserts.

Some of the recipes require a lot of ingredients or are too involved to be last-minute meals and need a little planning; others, like the snacks, are quick and easy. Most of the ingredients required are readily obtained at the local supermarket but are not necessarily ones I usually keep on-hand, so some advance planning may be required.

A Simple Side Dish

The chili-roasted acorn squash is a recipe I plan on making this summer with my garden veggies.

The book has a nice layout. Almost every recipe has a full color photo and a short intro, plus estimated prep time. Small sidebars accompany some of the instructions and provide hints, tips, and prep suggestions. Some even include substitutions for ingredients. Overall, a nice addition to my cookbook shelf.

Why Dinosaurs Matter by Kenneth Lacovara

A Rapid Review

Publisher: Simon Schuster Audio | September 2017
Format: Audio Download | 4½ hours | Rating: 4½ stars
Audio Listening Level: Easy

World-renowned paleontologist Kenneth Lacovara reveals how understanding dinosaurs can help us better understand our own biology—and our future.

What’s it about . . .
People love dinosaurs. We are fascinated by them. The more we learn about them the more we realize that dinosaurs achieved feats unparalleled by any other group of animals. They were adaptable and fascinating creatures that deserve a lot more respect than we give them. They did not die out because they were too slow or stupid to adapt, but instead were wiped out by a calamitous event that left them little time to adjust and recover.

What did I think . . .
This was especially interesting to me because it delves into the subject of why birds are dinosaurs, and that dinosaurs are not truly extinct – they live on as birds. The author explains how birds are descended from the theropod group, also known as avian dinosaurs, the ones that had feathers.

This is a well written and interesting book by an author who is passionate about the subject. So why do dinosaurs matter? The lesson here is that no species lasts forever. Humans take for granted that we are invincible, when in reality our time on this planet could be just as fleeting; we are far more fragile than the dinosaur. And in the end, it was an asteroid crashing into the earth that took down a mighty species.

Audio production . . .

This was read with enthusiasm by the author – maybe a little too much at times! It was a quick, enjoyable listen, read in a manner that the entire family will enjoy listening to.

Brewdog: Craft Beer for the People

A Rapid Review

Publisher: Mitchell Beazley | November 2017
Format: Hardcover | 240 pages

How to understand and enjoy craft beer, from one of the most exciting new beer brands.

This is an interesting look at the craft beer industry from Brewdog, a company based in the UK, that is aimed at the beer drinker who enjoys trying brews that are different and unique. In 10 years they have been very successful and have grown from 2 guys and a dog to 750 employees and a dog.

These guys are truly experts in their field and they make no secret of their dislike of corporate breweries marketing fake craft beer, or buying a small brewery just to get the name.

There is a lot of information in this book, everything from the proper way to taste beer to how to brew your own. There is even a section of recipes to pair with beers. The book has a nice layout with lots of color photos, illustrations, charts, and sidebars. Headings and points of interest are in bold type making it easy to flip through and stop and read a topic that catches the eye. The writing style is engaging, fun, and informative.
