A Good Audiobook Speaks Volumes

Holiday Blog Tour & Giveaway

November is the busiest travel month of the year, and audiobooks are the perfect travel companions. The Audio Publishers Association is sponsoring a Voices on the Road Tour and Audiobook Giveaway.

Throughout November, bloggers will be posting about their love of audiobooks and recommending some of their favorite titles and narrators.

I love audiobooks!

I never go anywhere without an audiobook. It wasn’t always so easy to do that with CDs, but now I can access them through my phone, either by download or by streaming. And I can listen with Bluetooth headphones or speakers. They keep me company while traveling, multitasking around the house and garden, and accompany me on my walks.

A few of my favorites

I have listened to hundreds of audiobooks, so it’s difficult to pick only a few favorites. Some stand out because I enjoyed the story, others because of the narrator. And some were the perfect combination of narrator and story.”

You by Caroline Kepnes

This was an obsessive, addictive, and creepy book. Joe is a stalker. From the day he encounters Beck in the bookstore, his desire to know everything about her, to control her, becomes an obsession. What makes the story so compulsive is the way it is written from the point of view of Joe, the stalker.

The narration was fanastic. Santino Fontana did a great job making me think I was listening to an obsessive, unbalanced person. He portrayed Joe with emotion and feeling… kind, impatient, angry, frustrated… easily switching between Joe’s many moods.

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

This one always makes list. If you enjoy science fiction, or even remotely enjoy science fiction, choose the audio version of this book.

This was a fun read filled with loads of 1980s pop cultural references, a lot of it sci-fi, and perfect for the geek in me. And to make it even better, it is narrated by Wil Wheaton (geeks know him from Star Trek and more recently, Big Bang Theory). His narration is outstanding: The characters, the pacing, the action, the voices are just perfect.

Love Life by Rob Lowe

This was an enjoyable and entertaining collection of stories from Rob Lowe. Witty and insightful, he touches on a little bit of everything – TV, movies, his family, friends, and even a little on his time in rehab and on why he decided to take acting lessons after he was already a successful actor. He performs the narration himself and does a great job with it. I often complain about authors not being the best narrators, but that is often the opposite in celebrity narrators.

I find memoirs easy to listen to and often recommend them to new audio listeners. They don’t require the same focus that a novel with a complex story line demands.

Why Dinosaurs Matter by Kenneth Lacovara

World-renowned paleontologist Kenneth Lacovara reveals how understanding dinosaurs can help us better understand our own biology—and our future.

This book was especially interesting to me because it delves into the subject of why birds are dinosaurs, and that dinosaurs are not truly extinct – they live on as birds. The book was read with enthusiasm by the author. It was a quick, enjoyable listen, read in a manner that the entire family will enjoy listening to.
