First Book of the Year 2017

Happy New Year!

And welcome to First Book of the Year hosted by Sheila at Book Journey. Join us as we kick off another year of great reading.

A Favorite Genre

I was having trouble deciding which book I should choose to start the year when Ninth City Burning showed up in my mailbox a few days ago. Science fiction has always been a favorite genre, and since I’ve been in a bit of a reading/writing slump, this could be what I need. It’s post apocalyptic science fiction, and the description reminded me of Ender’s Game, a favorite of mine.

The little photo-bomber on my shoulder is my parrot, Jentrie, one of my reading and blogging buddies. He would ride around on my shoulder all day if I would let him!

Ninth City Burning by J. Patrick Black

Centuries of war with aliens threaten the future of human civilization on earth in this gripping, epic science fiction debut…

We never saw them coming.

Entire cities disappeared in the blink of an eye, leaving nothing but dust and rubble. When an alien race came to make Earth theirs, they brought with them a weapon we had no way to fight, a universe-altering force known as thelemity. It seemed nothing could stop it—until we discovered we could wield the power too.

Five hundred years later, the Earth is locked in a grinding war of attrition. The talented few capable of bending thelemity to their will are trained in elite military academies, destined for the front lines. Those who refused to support the war have been exiled to the wilds of a ruined Earth.

But the enemy’s tactics are changing, and Earth’s defenders are about to discover this centuries-old war has only just begun. As a terrible new onslaught looms, heroes will rise from unlikely quarters, and fight back.

Les, Wishing you Peace, joy and good health in 2017. I participated in “first book of 2017” as well and also had a hard time choosing. Hope to get many more book suggestions from you this year.

Jentrie looks like he’s saying “come on, lets start reading it already!”. Hope it’s a wonderful first read of the year. Happy New Year!

This book looks and sounds wonderful! I like how the books we’re supposed to read just show up, somehow…at the right time. Great photo…adorable parrot!

Thanks for sharing…and for visiting my blog.

Happy New Year, Leslie! I also love SF; I hope it’s a good read! I read Dark Matter by Blake Crouch this week (SF). If you haven’t read it, I can certainly recommend it. Almost as good as Ready Player One (and that says a lot!).

Yes, I did read it, just haven’t written a review yet. It is on my Favorite Books of 2016 list which I will be posting this week.

It’s one of my favorites for last year, too! Looking forward to your review. As you might have noticed, I’m not doing many reviews these days.

  9. Love the photo bomb! I’m hoping to read more science fiction this year. It’s a genre that I never really think to read but always enjoy when I actually read it. I hope you enjoy your first book! Happy New Year!

Happy New Year of reading Lesley! It’s neat to see who joined you for the picture! I forgot to sign up for this this year, my first book is The Great and The Good, a French “classic” by Michel Déon

Love Jentrie on your shoulder. (Do you wear a burp cloth? I’ve had birds and enjoy them too.)
I’ve been gravitating toward more Sci Fi this past year. Enjoy your first read.

I have several old shirts I wear when he’s out because he likes to chew. He’s potty trained and rarely poops on me.

Ender’s Game is an all-time fave of mine too so I hope this one holds up. Jentrie is adorable.
