Wordless Wednesday: Speckles the Budgie

Speckles_150430

Almost wordless: Speckles is on holiday from the bird shelter and is staying at my house. I offered to foster her for a few weeks to break her cycle of chronic egg-laying, which is bad for their health. She stopped laying within days and has made herself at home here!

So she was just unhappy at the shelter? Poor girl. I hope she can stay with you until she is adopted. She’s a pretty girl.

No, she was overstimulated by too much daylight and the presence of male budgies, which in turn raised her hormone levels and she began laying eggs. A few eggs is ok, but she had at least 10+. Chronic egg-laying depletes calcium levels and causes heart and bone problems.

You must be providing her with a wonderful foster experience if she has changed so much. She is a beauty.

What a cutie! There was a budgie house with hundreds of budgies living at The Wilds (a place that you would love if you ever happen to make it to eastern Ohio). https://thewilds.columbuszoo.org/home/animals

    Leslie,
She is lovely! I didn’t know you could be a foster parent for a bird. 🙂
