Wordless Wednesday: On the River
Almost wordless: While out monitoring birds last weekend I counted hundreds of Canada Geese along the DuPage River. They were everywhere: On the grass, water and in the air – flying, floating, honking and squawking. Just watch where you step.

Yes! It’s almost impossible to avoid goose poop landmines. They also congregate on the grass and walk the paths and do not care where they leave a deposit. After a hike my shoes need to be washed off before entering the house.

The colder it gets up here the more that will migrate south to you. As long as the river remains unfrozen some of them will stick around.

At my work we have this huge field and Canadian geese are constantly hanging out there but for some reason they wander onto our parking lot during the night because come morning it’s like walking through a minefield to get to the front door. hahaha Lovely pictures. 🙂

A familiar scene around here, but about two weeks ago as the last migrants moved through. A lovely fall (?) scene.

It’s fall here for one more day. There was some ice on the river last weekend but temps in the 50s melted all of it this week. By Friday we will be in the arctic deep freeze. Hello winter!

Now these we have, lots of them. Even just last week, before this -20C temp., they were by the river and many took flight like your second photo. Yes, we see a lot of them and good that they make their way all the way to your home. Long flight! 😉

Some of them stay here all winter. When the river freezes over I see them walking on the ice. The cold doesn’t seem to bother them but I wonder what they do for food.

WOW – those are really awesome. We have a lake at work where Canadian Geese love to hand out. I love summer with the babies even though they make a nice green mess.

Canada geese are such great birds to watch — when they aren’t being a nuisance.

They’re ok in small numbers when they aren’t nesting. I monitored a nest one year and the female would try to bite me if I got too close.

Oh wow! How great to see that many geese. I was surprised to see Canada geese in New Zealand recently, but they’re well established there as it turns out (introduced of course). They get around I saw them in Wales this year too.

I can’t imagine introducing them to New Zealand was a good idea. They are everywhere in North America and it seems they are indestructible. Cold does not seem to bother them. In the not too distant past (maybe 25 years) we rarely saw one here in the winter. They would pass through during migration. Now they stay!
