Wordless Wednesday: Hornet’s Nest

Hornets Nest

Almost wordless: This is one of the largest hornet’s nests I’ve ever seen. It was safe to approach – in late summer or autumn they leave the nest.

*shudder*! I’m allergic to bee/wasp/hornet stings.

I haven’t run into any hornets nests, but I got stung by wasps when I was pruning a hydrangea and didn’t see the next near the trunk of the bush. Ouch!

It’s amazing that those creatures can build such a thing.

We had one of these built on the side of our house one year. We never noticed it but the cable guy sure did. Ours too was huge.

I saw this one at Cantigny Gardens, but I did have one in a tree in my yard a few years ago. We waited until the dead of winter when everything was frozen to remove it. And there was still that creepy feeling that maybe one would be left in there an attack me.

I’ve never seen anything like that size. Cool picture.

We had one at least this big on one of our bushes last year. Scary!
