Wordless Wednesday: Prairie Wildflower ~ Michigan or Tiger Lily?

Michigan Lily

Almost wordless: These lilies are growing wild in a local forest preserves. One of the people in my bird group knew they were native prairie plants found in the Eastern US and not an escaped garden lily. I thought it was a Michigan Lily, but my readers tell me Tiger Lily.

Very pretty Leslie. I have some that color here, but they are part-bloom now.

In Ohio we called this particular lily a tiger lily (a common name used quite freely for different lilies).

I did a little lily googling and found that there are three lilies that look the same… tiger lily, turk’s cap, and Michigan lily. From the way the leaves are set this may well be a Tiger Lily. Guess I better change the post title to just ‘wildflower lily’!

Lovely shot, Leslie. When I was a kid, my grandmother had a row of these along the sunny side of the barn. As Beth Fish mentioned, we always called them tiger lilies.

That’s three votes for tiger lily now. I’m going to have to go back and look closely at the leaves, that appears to be the way to tell the difference.

No! Not allowed to remove any plants from public land. I’ll have to get them from a plant sale or a catalog.

It is! And now I want some for my wildflower garden in my yard. I don’t have anything that’s orange.

In Northern California, it’s called Columbia Lily or Tiger Lily.:-) Very pretty.
