Wordless Wednesday: Poison Ivy
Almost wordless: I am 99% sure this is Poison Ivy: Alternating clusters of three leaves with long middle stem, white flowers/berries, notch on side leaflets, rough, almost furry main stem wrapping the tree. I am seeing a lot of it this year. This healthy specimen was on a wooded path at my bird monitoring point, so I had some time to stare at it while I listened for birds. I could be wrong but I’m not going to touch it to find out. Birds, by the way, can safely eat the berries.

Better safe than sorry. Apparently, we have a ton of it here this year, too. I still have a hard time identifying it even though I know all of the things to look out for. I’ve only had the poison ivy rash once and that was more than enough. Very nice photo, by the way.

I’m getting better at identifying it. I used to avoid anything that had three leaves or climbed a tree.

I always have trouble picking out what’s poison ivy. Thankfully I don’t get it too badly. My daughter on the other hand had her legs covered with is last summer.

I’ve never gotten it but I have very sensitive skin which irritates easily so I’m paranoid about it. And I’m seeing it on every hike this year… and last year too.

Thanks for showing poison ivy! I’ve heard of it, in books, and wasn’t really sure what it would be like. I only know this kind of ivy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hedera_algeriensis
We in Europe tend to get stung by nettles. Not a pleasure but not as bad as poison ivy, I think!

The poison ivy plant doesn’t look as evil as it is, and animals are not bothered by it, only humans and to varying degrees. I haven’t run into any nettles yet but I’m pretty sure we have them here too.
Your ivy looks like what we call English Ivy, and some people (me) consider it a weed. I have a patch of it along my back fence that I can’t get rid of, even weed killer won’t kill it.

Leslie, I also have a patch of this ivy in my back garden, in a corner near the garden of my neighbors (I think it comes from them!). I keep pulling it away but it keeps coming back. Ah, it’s a challenge!

Oh yes, that is the wicked little vine that caused me much “irritation” for 10 years when our home abutted the woods.
