Weekend Birding: Hiding In Plain Sight

Mourning Dove

This Mourning Dove was so nicely camouflaged that I almost didn’t see it. There were several in a small tree and I only noticed when one of them moved. A nice example of natural protection.

Mourning Dove

I don’t think nature will provide the same protection for a dove sleeping in my backyard feeder. The bird only poked its head up when I opened the window to take this photo.

funny you post this today: today for the 1st time this year, I heard some mourning dove, with their spring call!, that is, a month earlier than usual, according to my personal records!

My dove was quiet but I heard a cardinal singing yesterday and the House Sparrows have been chirping for a week now.

I love these photos. My daughter has morning doves where she lives–and I love hearing them in the trees, cooing all day long. So peaceful.

It’s an incredibly well camouflaged bird, but the detail in the second photo is very clear. What sort of camera do you use – if it’s not a rue question?
