Weekend Birding: Snuggling Bluebirds

While out on a birdwalk last month we noticed two Eastern Bluebirds fly by and land together in a tree.

When I got closer I noticed they were snuggling together. I have no idea why they would do that, it’s not mating season, but they sat there for about five minutes. It was a windy day and they look a little fluffed up. Maybe they were cold.

Bluebirds are found across most of North America. The birds above are the Eastern Bluebird which is found in the eastern US, Mexico and southeastern Canada. Western Bluebirds are seen in parts of the western US and Mexico and the brilliantly colored Mountain Bluebird can be found in the western US, Canada and Mexico.

Maybe they just didn’t get the memo about it not being mating season. How cute!

I think they’re bracing against the wind. Very cute. I’ve never seen the blue bird here in my neck of the woods. But not likely will I see many different species until next spring now.

You’ll see the Mountain Bluebird in the spring but they’ve probably migrated by now. I’m on the edge of the year round range for the Eastern Bluebird. As our winters have gotten warmer more of them are staying here since they can find food.

I have a 250mm zoom lens which helps. To get within range of a shot I move very, very slowly and hope the birds don’t notice me and take off. These two were cooperative and sat on that branch for a few minutes while several of us with cameras crept closer and closer.

Are they snuggling, or is she saying “Look excuse me, but I was on this branch first”?

She landed there first. He showed up a few seconds later and kept moving closer and closer. There was a second male on a branch to the left. Maybe he was ‘protecting’ her from the other guy! Or just a jealous male. lol

Oh, they’re so cute together! Great shot!

As for our lovely trees in the backyard, we have also lost many in the past year – 4 trees in our front yard, due to diseases. So sad to see them go! At least, we still have woods behind our house.
