Wordless Wednesday: Mr. & Mrs. Mallard

Almost Wordless: A pair of Mallards out for a swim in the nature park near my home in suburban Chicago.

    Lovely photo! I find it interesting that the male is the more colorful one!

      The female stays brown so she will blend in with the ground when sitting on her nest. Interestingly the male will molt in the fall and turn the same color as the female. You can still tell them apart by the bill, the male’s is yellow and the female, orange.

    Great capture! I’m going to have to go down to the marsh preserve and see what water fowl I can capture on “film”

    Love the “couple”! Wonder why the male is always more colorful than the female?

      The males only have the green heads during mating season, to attract the females. The rest of the year they both look alike.

    Each March we used to have a pair of Mallards come rest and swim in the pool for most of a day. They didn’t come this year. I miss them!
