Weekend Birding: Sharing a Meal

If you put up a bird feeder you inevitably get squirrels. They spend most of their day thinking up ways to get the seed out of the feeder and often they succeed. Occasionally they coexist peacefully with the birds and forage on the ground.

Mrs. Cardinal stayed alert but didn’t leave her meal just because a squirrel showed up. Mr. Cardinal was nearby but out of camera range. I took this through the glass door so it’s a little dull. The cardinals are skittish birds, when they hear the door open they immediately fly away.

She’s so pretty! That squirrel, though . . . not so much.

Squirrels are an abomination as far as I’m concerned. They run over our pool cage constantly and drive us nuts. The female cardinal though is beautiful

That’s a great shot! You can see so much detail on the bird – and I love the fuzzy squirrel, lurking slightly out of range.

Oh yes, those squirrels can get seeds from any bird feeder. I love cardinals.

It’s a great photo, hard to believe you took it through a glass door.

Even your “dull” pictures look great! I love seeing the shots of cardinals–mainly because I have yet to get a really good one. Love it!

I love that photo! We put out some hanging pinecone (peanut butter & seeds) birdfeeders and the birds and squirrels are all ignoring them. I think it’s because we didn’t hang them in the tree, but from some hooks.

I have a couple of feeders on shepherds hooks and only one in a tree. Sometimes it takes a little while for the birds to find them.

What a cute bird with such a beautiful red beak and I love the tuft! We haven’t seen any squirrels here – where we used to live there were quite a few used to come into the garden. They were experts at knocking the feeders of the trees to get the seeds etc.

Awesome shot! Add in a rabbit (or two) and substitute a red poll for the cardinal and you have the scene at my backyard feeders. I could never photograph them, though. They are always on the move.

I saw a squirrel and a male cardinal sharing the spoils below a bird feeder when I was on holidays in Texas last year. Good to see it wasn’t a one off.
