Saturday Snapshot: Winter Thaw
It’s still 51 days until spring but our weather has been anything but winter-like. I’m not complaining. On the contrary, this is exactly how I would like winter to be: sunny days, mild temperatures, and small amounts of snow followed by a warm spell.
Yesterday was one of those warm sunny days so I wandered over to the nature park. I have been trying to walk at least one mile a day as part of my stay-fit plan. The paths were mostly clear, the creek was flowing and there was still a light cover of icy snow. It was actually pretty.
I noticed a group of Robins kicking around in the leaf litter. This one was looking in the water. I don’t know if he was contemplating a drink or looking at his reflection. Robins hang out in groups during the winter and some will stay in the area as long as they can find food. There are a lot of trees with berries in this park so I usually see Robins here.
I like the look of the bare trees against the winter sky. Something about the texture of the bark, it’s as if we can see the bones of the trees.

You have robins already? They haven’t shown up here yet, even though we’ve had pretty mild temperatures also. He sure is a curious little fellow, isn’t he? He’s all, Huh? What’s there?

I haven’t seen any individual robins in the backyard yet. I’ve seen them in flocks eating berries from the trees and kicking around the leaf litter in the parks and forest preserves.

I’m fortunate to have this park within walking distance. The park district took 10 acres of unbuildable wetlands in a land swap with the school district and have been rehabbing it into a nature area.

I like the “bones” of the trees, too. They look etched across the sky, like a work of art. Thanks for sharing.

Our winter has been much the same here in Minnesota – in fact we did not get our first snow until a couple weeks ago which is so fine by me! By Monday we are suppose to be back in the 30’s and I am so excited!

The entire Midwest is having a perfect winter, if there is such a thing. I woke to snow this morning but it will be 40F by Monday, and in the 40s all week. Woohooo! I’m excited too.

Great photos. We have a bit more snow than you but our weather has been doing the same thing. We had that bitter cold spell and now we’re back to the nice temps. Other than the freezing rain I love a warmer winter like this.

Great photos! I’d love to have robins year round. I could listen to them sing all day. Maybe this one is contemplating a dip? On nice winter days (near 0C/32F) we have three bluejays who fight over the heated birdbath.

My robins aren’t singing yet. I did hear a cardinal calling a few days ago though. I must have well-behaved blue jays, they don’t fight, but the starlings do!
