Wordless Wednesday: Monarch Caterpillar
Almost Wordless: I planted Milkweed in my wildflower garden to attract Monarch Butterflies. Apparently it works. I spotted this little guy munching on a milkweed leaf a few days ago.

Thanks for visiting NotJustReading and commenting. I used to love audiobooks as a child but these days I have too bad a case of grasshopper mind (it’s the Bipolar that causes it). I can just about watch TV but even that’s a struggle sometimes. Reading is far, far better 🙂

Incredible photo! Yes, milkweed works – in fact, ti’s the only thing that works for Monarchs as their larva feed on that alone.
When I was a kid, there was milkweed all along the country roads, but then it became the ‘thing’ to cut or kill all the “weeds” in the ditches. Meanwhile Monarch populations decline dangerously. Sad what man has done to the earth…

I added the Milkweed last year specifically for the Monarchs and am thrilled they found it. Just because a plant has the word weed in it’s name doesn’t make it undesirable.
I put the wildflower garden in last year and it has been one of the best additions to my yard. I’m going to add as second, larger one out front next year. It is so much better than grass. I have bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and the goldfinches eat the seeds from the coneflowers.

An interesting side note… I learned about the milkweed from my library. They have a Monarch terrarium with caterpillars, cocoons, and emerging butterflies on the front counter where you check out books. They release the butterflies on the prairie path. And the librarians are most happy to tell visitors all about them. So I ran out and bought Milkweed for my garden!
