Weekend Birding: Splish Splash, Robins in the Bath

One of the easiest ways to attract birds to your yard is to put out a bird bath. It may take them a few weeks to find it but once they do you will have an assortment of birds stopping by for a drink or to freshen up.

I added a tray of water on the ground so the squirrels would have a place to drink and stop jumping up on the large bath. Instead, I spotted a family of robins using the lower level.

The robins are my favorite birds to watch in the water. They don’t just take a sip or a quick dip; they jump in and splash around, sometimes for quite a while.

In the photo above, dad robin (he’s on the far left) was showing his three youngsters the water.

You can easily tell young robins by their speckled breasts and quizzical expressions. Junior stopped by the edge of the water and thought about it for a while as if he was hesitant to get wet.

But eventually he jumped in.

Seeing these photos it’s easy for me to tell that I haven’t seen young robins before. I love the speckles, but I’ve only ever seen robins with the solid red breast (of course who knows, maybe I mistook a youngster for something else). 🙂

They only have the speckles for a few months so they’re easy to miss.

Love the birds! – I have several robin pictures in my house. Great shots – especially the one where the robin is enjoying his bath.

That is really adorable, and it’s a good idea putting out a bird bath like that both for the good of the birds and for all the photo opportunities you get.

Ah, it’s good to see the birds cooling off, too. I love bird baths, anyway (and birdhouses!). Thanks for sharing. I have a bird bath (and some birdhouses) on my patio, but there’s only water in the bath when it rains.

Love your bird photos each week! We built a bird bath in the spring based on this tutorial: http://darningdiva.blogspot.com/2010/03/diy-bird-bath.html. So cheap and it looks great. I plan to add some more at varying height levels.

Thanks for all the nice comments.

The robins are the most fun to watch in the bath. They actually have a good time splashing around while bathing. I’ve seen them splash for a few minutes, fly over to the fence and preen, and then get back in for a second dip in pool.

Your photos are always amazing. I have trouble just SEEING the birds (I know they’re around because I can hear them), let alone getting them “on film”. Thanks again for sharing.
