Weekend Birding: White-Crowned Sparrow
For a week or two in early autumn and early spring the White-crowned sparrow visits my suburban Chicago backyard. I look forward to his visit in spring, not so much in autumn as I know winter will soon follow.
This is a migratory native North American sparrow that spends it’s summers mainly in Canada and winters in the mid to southern United States and Mexico. Larger than the House Sparrow, it can usually be found scratching around on the ground for seeds.
I took this photo Halloween weekend, the same weekend he arrived last year. I sometimes wonder if the same birds visit every year.

Glad you enjoy them. I’m going to feature a bird or something about birds on the weekends.

That is gorgeous! I love bird watching. The birds don’t get as close to the house as they used to since we got cats a few years ago.

His feather pattern and colors are so interesting! I especially like the black and white striped ‘cap’.

He’s beautiful. Never have seen a sparrow with a white cap. How many different kinds of sparrows are there? I’ll bet he’s the same guy. He likes you.

There’s quite a few different sparrows but not all of them come to backyards. In addition to the common House Sparrow which is pretty much everywhere, I also have White-throated sparrows, Song sparrows, Chipping Sparrows, American Tree Sparrows and Dark-eyed Juncos (also a sparrow) visit my yard.
