Mailbox Monday ~ August 9th

Mailbox Monday is touring through blogs in the upcoming months. In August it will be hosted by Chick Loves Lit.

Mailbox Monday was created by The Printed Page. It is the gathering place for readers to share the books that came into their home last week.

In my mailbox last week:

A review copy of New Tricks by David Rosenfelt from Hachette Books.

New TricksAttorney Andy Carpenter is about to represent an adorable Bernese mountain dog puppy, whose owner was brutally murdered, in a custody fight. Few can rival Andy’s affection for dogs, and he’s determined to keep Waggy from falling into the wrong hands. But this playful pup possesses a valuable secret that some people will resort to violence to obtain. It will take more than Andy’s usual courtroom theatrics to save Waggy, including help from the lawyer’s golden retriever, Tara. Andy soon discovers that everyone around him is in danger, including his longtime girlfriend, Laurie–and only some high-risk new tricks will save those he cherishes most.

A finished copy of The Particular Sadness Of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender in a giveaway contest at A Musing Reviews.

The Particular Sadness Of Lemon CakeOn the eve of her ninth birthday, unassuming Rose Edelstein, a girl at the periphery of schoolyard games and her distracted parents’ attention, bites into her mother’s homemade lemon-chocolate cake and discovers she has a magical gift: she can taste her mother’s emotions in the cake. She discovers this gift to her horror, for her mother—her cheerful, good-with-crafts, can-do mother—tastes of despair and desperation. Suddenly, and for the rest of her life, food becomes a peril and a threat to Rose.

An ARC of Keep The Change by Steve Dublanica through Shelf Awareness.

Tipping is huge in America. Almost everyone leaves at least one tip every day, more than five million American workers depend on them, and we spend $66 billion in tips each year. And everyone recognizes that queasy feeling — in bars and restaurants, barbershops and beauty parlors, hotels and strip clubs and everywhere else — when the check arrives or the tip jar looms. Omnipresent yet poorly understood, tipping has worked its way into almost every part of everyday life.

All 3 of those books look great. The dog cover sort of looks like a Harlequin romance for dogs. It cracks me up.

I’m curious to know what you thought of The particular sadness of lemon cake. I enjoyed it for the most part, the Joseph bit was a little more than I cared for.
