Welcome to Mailbox Monday, created by Marcia of To Be Continued, a place where readers share the books that came in their mailbox during the last week.
After several years of being on tour with different blogs as the monthly host, the Mailbox Monday Blog is now the permanent home for the meme.
Only one book last week — a candy cookbook. I am looking forward to creating some yummy treats for the upcoming holidays. Other than fudge, I have never tried making candy before, so this should be fun!

Almost wordless: Destructive little critters were eating the Milkweed seeds. Interestingly, they have the same coloring as the Monarchs, who also feed on the Milkweed. And like the Monarchs, the sap they eat from the Milkweed makes them toxic to predators. These were in the prairie. I prefer they not visit my milkweed patch.

Another fairly busy week but I managed to carve out a block of time for reading by participating in Dewey’s 24 Hour Readathon this past Saturday. Here’s what arrived last week . . .
New Arrivals

From the common swallowtail to the iridescent blue morpho, Thomas Marent’s stunning photographs provide a close-up view of the remarkable family of insects known as Lepidoptera.

But behind the gilded facade, their marriage is a shambles, and their teenage son, Quentin, is self-destructing. In desperation, Daniel dusts off a long-delayed dream a sailing trip around the world. Little does he know, the voyage he hopes will save them may destroy them instead.

Let the Reading Begin
Many of you are familiar with the Readathon, a twice yearly event which begins today at midnight GMT and continues for 24 hours.
Hundreds of readers are participating and posting on their blogs, Twitter, Facebook and Goodreads.
I will be participating most of the day with a few breaks for errands and other unavoidable chores. The pet birds really do need to be cleaned and fed! But that is what audiobooks are for.
The Readathon began for me at 7 a.m. Chicago time, and this is my eighth Readathon. I have yet to make a full 24 hours and probably won’t this time either since I have a few unavoidable things to do tomorrow, but it’s always a great time.
I will be updating this post throughout the Readathon.
Rather than fill my feed with posts that some of you may not be interested in, I will use this one post for my updates and mini-challenges throughout the day and on twitter at #readathon.

Almost wordless: There were a lot of acrobatic little Goldfinches busy harvesting seeds on the prairie plants last week.

It has a been a bit slow here at Under My Apple Tree for the past month or so. Even my garden has suffered some neglect as I have taken on two foster birds and more work for the bird shelter, including being on the adoption committee and managing a facebook page for the shelter (likes are greatly appreciated) to increase awareness of birds needing new homes.
Plus, I’m helping to get my father-in-law’s home ready for sale. Fifty years of stuff is a lot to sort through – what to keep, what to sell, and a lot of junk! That is motivating me to clean out my own closets and attic and get rid of things I’m not using.
New Books
The Japanese Lover by Isabel Allende from Atria.
An exquisitely crafted love story and multi-generational epic that sweeps from San Francisco in the present-day to Poland and the United States during the Second World War.
