Almost wordless: For the past few weeks I have been preparing plants to bring them inside for the winter. This cutting from a favorite geranium presented me with one last bloom before winter and is now residing in the garden window.

It was a busy week for me with not much time for reading or blogging. I spent the final warm days last week preparing my garden for winter, harvesting the last of the herbs and veggies, and bringing in the plants I want to save over the winter. I’ll be cooking Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday, so I also needed to get the house straightened up and find places to put all those plants.
Nothing in my mailbox last week, but I did receive a couple of new e-books.

All Our Wrong Todays by Elan Mastai from NetGalley
You know the future that people in the 1950s imagined we’d have? Well, it happened. In Tom Barren’s 2016, humanity thrives in a techno-utopian paradise of flying cars, moving sidewalks, and moon bases, where avocados never go bad and punk rock never existed . . . because it wasn’t necessary.
The 13th Continuum by Jennifer Brody from Turner Publishing.
One thousand years after a cataclysmic event leaves humanity on the brink of extinction, the survivors take refuge in continuums designed to sustain the human race until repopulation of Earth becomes possible.

The Art of Mixing Perfect Drinks
Publisher: DK | September 6, 2016
Learn the art of mixing perfect drinks with Cocktails, the third “Best Cocktail Book in the World.” Klaus St. Rainer, an award-winning expert voted “Bartender of the Year” in 2013, shares 70 cocktail recipes for all the key classics as well as his own signature creations.
When I think of a bartender’s drink guide, I envision something small and easy to keep behind or near the bar.
Cocktails is something quite different. This book is large and beautiful, designed more like a cookbook. It’s complete with a full color photo of each drink on the page opposite the recipe, as opposed to the classic drink guide, like the smaller and mostly text Mr. Boston Bartender Guide.
The book contains 70 recipes ranging from simple to quite complex plus an introductory section on glassware, tools, ingredients, and preparation techniques. Many of these drinks I had never heard of and, although they sound interesting, some of the ingredients needed and equipment used to make them are not things most people keep on hand.

While this is a beautiful book that looks great on my cookbook shelf, or even as a coffee table book, it is not a practical guide to drink-making. It would, however, make an excellent gift for the aspiring mixologist or cocktail aficionado.
