In my mailbox last week:
An ARC of The Eternal Ones by Kirsten Miller through Shelf Awareness.
Haven Moore can’t control her visions of a past with a boy called Ethan, and a life in New York that ended in fiery tragedy. In our present, she designs beautiful dresses for her classmates with her best friend Beau. Dressmaking keeps her sane, since she lives with her widowed and heartbroken mother in her tyrannical grandmother’s house in Snope City, a tiny town in Tennessee. Then an impossible group of coincidences conspire to force her to flee to New York, to discover who she is, and who she was.
A finished copy of The Nobodies Album by Carolyn Parkhurst which I won in a giveaway.
From the bestselling author of The Dogs of Babel comes a dazzling literary mystery about the lengths to which some people will go to rewrite their past.
Bestselling novelist Octavia Frost has just completed her latest book—a revolutionary novel in which she has rewritten the last chapters of all her previous books, removing clues about her personal life concealed within, especially a horrific tragedy that befell her family years ago.
Thanks to Valerie at Hachette Books I have 3 copies of New Tricks by David Rosenfelt to give away to my readers. Who can resist a book with two adorable dogs on the cover? I haven’t received read my review copy yet, so here’s a description from the publisher:
New Tricks
by David Rosenfelt
Attorney Andy Carpenter is about to represent an adorable Bernese mountain dog puppy, whose owner was brutally murdered, in a custody fight. Few can rival Andy’s affection for dogs, and he’s determined to keep Waggy from falling into the wrong hands. But this playful pup possesses a valuable secret that some people will resort to violence to obtain. It will take more than Andy’s usual courtroom theatrics to save Waggy, including help from the lawyer’s golden retriever, Tara. Andy soon discovers that everyone around him is in danger, including his longtime girlfriend, Laurie–and only some high-risk new tricks will save those he cherishes most.

A weekly meme about (mostly) books and reading. This week’s question is:
Which fictional character (or group of characters) would you like to spend a day at the beach with? Why would he/she/they make good beach buddies?
I read a lot of science fiction, mysteries and thrillers and I can’t think of any of those characters I’d like to go to the beach with. They’re the kind of folks I like to observe from afar.
The last book I read that had characters I’d like to meet was Alice I Have Been, a fictionalized tale of the life of Alice Liddell, the real life Alice in Wonderland. An afternoon with Alice would be fun. She was adventurous and I’m sure spending time with her would be interesting. Especially if we could find that rabbit hole on the beach!
Chicago’s Newberry Library is holding their annual used book sale this weekend. A book sale of this caliber is very tempting and only a few miles away from where I work. Not that I need more books, no I don’t. I have shelves brimming with books waiting to be read. It’s just so difficult for me to pass up quality time browsing through more books. Book lovers, you know what I mean.
The fair sprawls through six rooms, offers 120,000 used books in 70 categories and admission is free. Most books sell for under $2.00.

In my mailbox last week:
An ARC of Antiphon by Ken Scholes, book three of the Psalms of Isaak through Barnes and Noble’s Science Fiction / Fantasy forums.
The ancient past is not dead. The hand of the Wizard Kings still reaches out to challenge the Androfrancine Order, to control the magick and technology that they sought to understand and claim for their own.
Nebios, the boy who watched the destruction of the city of Windwir, now runs the vast deserts of the world, far from his beloved Marsh Queen. He is being hunted by strange women warriors, while his dreams are invaded by warnings from his dead father.
An ARC of How To Be An American Housewife by Margaret Dilloway from LibraryThing’s Early Reviewer program.
A lively and surprising novel about a Japanese woman with a closely guarded secret, the American daughter who strives to live up to her mother’s standards, and the rejuvenating power of forgiveness.
Library Loot is a weekly event hosted by The Adventures of an Intrepid Reader that encourages bloggers to share the books they’ve checked out from the library. If you’d like to participate, just write up your post-feel free to steal the button-and link it using the Mr. Linky any time during the week. And of course check out what other participants are getting from their libraries!
With a large TBR pile staring at me I wasn’t planning to take out any books from the library this week. That changed when I received an ARC for Antiphon, book 3 of the Psalms of Isaak series by Ken Scholes. In order to participate fully in forum discussions I needed to get up to speed and read the first two books, Lamentation and Canticle.

An ancient weapon has completely destroyed the city of Windwir. From many miles away, Rudolfo, Lord of the Nine forest Houses, sees the horrifying column of smoke rising. He knows that war is coming to the Named Lands.
Nearer to the Devastation, a young apprentice is the only survivor of the city–he sat waiting for his father outside the walls and was transformed as he watched everyone he knew die in an instant.
Soon, all the Kingdoms of the Named Lands will be at one another’s throats, as alliances are challenged and hidden plots are uncovered.
This is an excellent SciFi-Fantasy series. If you’re a fan and like me you haven’t read these yet I highly recommend you give them look.
