Review & Giveaway: What the Zhang Boys Know by Clifford Garstang

What the Zhang Boys Know by Clifford GarstangWhat the Zhang Boys Know
A Novel in Stories
by Clifford Garstang

Genre: Short Stories
Publisher: Press 53
Publish Date: October 1, 2012
Format: Paperback | 218 pages
Rating: 4½ of 5

The Zhang boys, young Simon and Wesley, live with their father, Feng-qi, in the Nanking Mansion, a 12-unit condominium building in the Washington, DC area near Chinatown. Zhang Feng-qi is a widower; his American wife was recently killed in a car accident. Although none of their parents approved of their marriage, his father has moved here from China and his mother-in-law has just arrived for a visit to help with the boys. The boys believe their mother is coming back; Feng-qi is searching for a replacement wife.

The book is composed of twelve short stories, each centering around one of the residents of the building. They are a diverse group of people brought vividly to life in their pain, sorrow and longings. While each of them are flawed, they are also sympathetic, well-drawn characters. The writing was beautiful. The stories came alive. The shifting viewpoints and changes in writing style as we heard from the different individuals enhanced the reading experience.

In A Hole in the Wall we meet a young attorney as he takes a sledge hammer to a wall, ostensibly to begin construction on a balcony, but really to dull the pain of his failed marriage. There is the painter in The Face in the Window, who is haunted by a face in one of his paintings, an image from the past. In Hunger, a woman’s lifelong irresponsible behavior leaves her penniless and she must sell her possessions to survive. In The Replacement Wife we meet the young woman who Feng-qi hopes will become his new wife and mother to his children, but she hasn’t told him that she is unable to have children of her own. We also meet the sculptor, the writer, the gay couple, the building owner and the young couple renting the front unit from an owner who will expectantly return, each with their own story, each a part of the whole.

I enjoy short stories, especially those that are interconnected by characters or theme. While each of these stories could stand on their own, they are part of a novel. There are threads through each story that tie them together and weave them into one tale. Over a period of a year’s time we observe the neighbors interact with each other, some in the most unlikely ways. And through each story the Zhang boys are ever-present and know something about each resident.

I know some of my readers are not fond of short stories, but this is more like a novel because of the way the characters interact with each other. If a book has a beginning and an end, it’s a novel. The last story, The Shrine to His Ancestors, gives us resolution for Feng-qi; and while I would like to know what ultimately happened to the other residents of Nanking Mansion, that is left to our imagination.

Review – Audiobook: One Last Thing Before I Go by Jonathan Tropper

One Last Thing Before I Go by Jonathan TropperOne Last Thing Before I Go
by Jonathan Tropper
Narrated by John Shea

Genre: Humor
Publisher: Penguin Audio
Publish Date: August 21, 2012
Format: Audio, 8 hours | 18 minutes
Audio Listening Level: Easy
Rating: 3 of 5

Drew Silver has made many mistakes in his life. A former drummer for a one-hit wonder rock band, he is now divorced, living in an apartment building with other divorced men and makes a living playing in wedding bands. His ex-wife is getting remarried, his college-bound daughter confided in him she is pregnant, and he has just found out that he urgently needs heart surgery. But Silver refuses the operation. As his exasperated family looks on, Silver grapples with the ultimate question of whether or not his own life is worth saving.

I enjoyed listening to the audiobook but didn’t care much about most of the characters. That probably says a lot for the narration, which was able to keep me engaged even though it didn’t matter to me whether Silver lived or died. He is just such a failure that I could never tolerate being around him. I could barely feel sorry for him! That sounds awful, but sometimes we don’t connect with a character but can still be entertained enough to keep listening to the story. Parts of it were funny and did have me laughing while I was busy doing house chores.

If a comedic story about a screwed-up, aging rock-star appeals to you, then you might find this entertaining. This was my first book by Jonathan Tropper and may not have been the best first choice for me. Since I liked his writing style, I would not hesitate to read another of his books, or try out some of his backlist.

Mailbox Monday and It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?

Mailbox Monday

Mailbox Monday was created by The Printed Page. It is the gathering place for readers to share the books that came into their home last week.

Mailbox Monday is currently on tour, hosted by a different blog each month. The October host is Marcia at The Mailbox Monday Blog.

For review from the publicist:

Shortest Way Home by Juliette FayThe Shortest Way Home
by Juliette Fay

Sean has spent twenty years in Third World war zones and natural disaster areas, fully embracing what he’d always felt was his life’s mission. But when burnout sets in, Sean is reluctantly drawn home to Belham, Massachusetts, the setting of Fay’s much-loved Shelter Me. There, he discovers that his steely aunt, overly dramatic sister, and quirky nephew are having a little natural disaster of their own. When he reconnects with a woman from his past, Sean has to wonder if the bonds of love and loyalty might just rewrite his destiny.

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? is hosted by Sheila at Book Journey.

Share what you read last week and what you are currently reading.

Last week I listened to One Last Thing Before I Go by Jonathan Tropper and And When She Was Good by Laura Lippman. I was hoping to get the reviews written when I finished up my Bloggiesta tasks but that didn’t happen, so I should have them later this week.

I am almost finished reading What the Zhang Boys Know and will have a review and giveaway posted on Wednesday. It’s quite different from what I usually read but I am totally absorbed in these interconnected stories and find them very engaging.

Reading/Listening This Week:

The Graveyard Book by Neil GaimanThis is How You Lose Her by Junot DiazI’ll be listening to The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman over the next two weeks for the RIP VII Group read hosted by Stainless Steel Droppings. I’ll also be listening to The Three Day Affair and This is How You Lose Her.

I haven’t decided on a print book yet, but I’m still trying to get to The Dog Stars, so this may be the week I read it.

RSS Feed Update (or Feedburner Has Become Unreliable)

Is Feedburner Shutting Down?

There have been a few rumors but no official announcement on the fate of Feedburner. Last week I noticed that statistics were unavailable but the feed was still working. How long that will last is anyone’s guess.

Years ago when I first started the blog I used Feedburner to provide my RSS feed and email delivery. A year or two ago WordPress improved their subscription services and I switched my feed to their system but left Feedburner active. As a result, I have subscribers using both feeds. Unfortunately I don’t know who subscribes to which feed.

What does this mean for you?

For most of you, nothing. The majority of my subscribers are using the WordPress subscription system. How can you tell which one you are using? If you have an email subscription through Feedburner it will say “Email delivery powered by Google” at the bottom. The RSS feed will be coming from: “feeds.feedburner.com/undermyappletree”. If you currently have a WordPress blog you are probably subscribed through the WordPress system.

Weekend Birding: Juvenile Northern Cardinal

One of my favorite backyard birds is the Northern Cardinal. Two pairs regularly visit my backyard feeders and I have been waiting all summer to see a baby cardinal.

This week I finally saw a young cardinal at the feeder with his parents. They were showing him the sunflower seeds. They arrived just after sunset and it was too dark for a photo. Today he showed up again and was eating seeds from the ground under the feeder.

Juvenile Male Cardinal

This is a young male, the equivalent of a teenager. He is just starting to grow his bright red feathers and soon his bill will transition to the familiar orange that distinguishes cardinals.

Juvenile Male Cardinal

I will be bird watching out in a prairie today. It’s migration season and I hope to see a lot of birds not normally found in Illinois as they pass through on their journey south.

I’ll be stopping by to visit everyone’s photos later today.

Bloggiesta Begins Today

Bloggiesta is a three-day blogging party devoted to working on perfecting your blog and connecting with others bloggers doing the same thing. If you aren’t already familiar with Bloggiesta, hop over to It’s All About Books and There’s a Book, our hosts for the fiesta.

I’m not going to be as ambitious as I was during the last Bloggiesta. I’ll be out most of the day on Saturday and won’t have as much time to devote to it but I do want to participate in a few of the activities.

I’m pretty happy with the look and feel of my blog so I won’t be making any artistic changes but there is a little behind the scenes housekeeping that I need to catch up on and some posts and reviews I’d like to write. I’ll also be taking part in a few mini-challenges as there is always something new to learn.

To-do List:

Back up the blog.
• Housekeeping:
Clean up email
Clean up google reader Save this for another day!
Update Links in Menus
Replace Feedburner with a new delivery system.
• Review About, Disclosure and Policies pages and update.
• Create a page for Giveaway Info and Rules.
• Participate in several Mini Challenges:
How to Use Evernote
Changing Your RSS Feed
• Attend a twitter party. Missed the Friday party, not home for the Sat & Sun parties. 😦
• Visit other blogs and offer encouragement.
Are you planning any changes this weekend?
