Mailbox Monday ~ June 29th
Welcome to Mailbox Monday, created by Marcia of To Be Continued, a place where readers share the books that came in their mailbox during the last week.
After several years of being on tour with different blogs as the monthly host, the Mailbox Monday Blog is now the permanent home for the meme.
Good thing there are lots of daylight hours this time of year because I have been crazy busy this past week with outdoor projects and events.
This past weekend I participated in a BioBlitz hosted by the forest preserve district. A BioBlitz is a 24-hour event in which teams of scientists, naturalists and volunteers work together to find and identify all the living species—plant and animal—within a designated area. I was a volunteer citizen scientist on the bird counting team. The final results aren’t in yet, but I already know the event was a success.
Unfortunately there was not a lot of time for reading or writing last week, but I did get to listen to some audiobooks. A few new books arrived in the mail . . .

Letters to the Lost by Iona Grey from Goodreads.

Reading the Comments: Likers, Haters, and Manipulators at the Bottom of the Web by Joseph M. Reagle from Amazon Vine.
Online comment can be informative or misleading, entertaining or maddening. Haters and manipulators often seem to monopolize the conversation. Some comments are off-topic, or even topic-less. In this book, Joseph Reagle urges us to read the comments. Conversations “on the bottom half of the Internet,” he argues, can tell us much about human nature and social behavior.

The event sounds really good! Did you spent the full 24 hours there, or did you take shifts?
The comments book sounds like fun – It probably has lots of recognizable things!

Different groups went out at different times. The best time to count birds is at dawn, so my group went out at 6:30am. By 2pm I was exhausted.There were teams for plants, butterflies, reptiles, snakes, small mammals, etc—and we had ‘real’ scientists working with us too. Plus there were exhibits for the public and they could see some of our results in real time.

Wow, 6:30am isn’t impossible, but Im not surprised you were exhausted by 2pm. It’s like a full working day. Nice that it was such a big event. Must be great to be part of it.

What a fun event for you!
I’ll be reading Letters to the Lost soon. The comments book sounds interesting. I tend only to read comments on book blogs. There are so many negative people on the internet who only spew hateful things (I found that out reading comments on a newspaper article). Won’t go down that rabbit hole again!

I worked for free all day and had a great time—which tells me I should have chosen science as a career instead of boring tax work!
The comment book won’t be enlightening—I think by now I’ve seen it all. But it should be an interesting analysis. And yes, comments tend to bring out the crazy, but not very much in the book community; nothing like what I see elsewhere. Even Facebook is crazy, and those people are using their real identities.

Two good books, I really like “Letters To The Lost.” The nonfiction book about the web looks interesting too. Glad you enjoyed volunteering as a citizen scientist.
