Spotlight & Giveaway: Monday, Monday by Elizabeth Crook
About the Book
Monday, Monday: A Novel
by Elizabeth Crook
Publisher: Sarah Crichton Books
Publish Date: April 29, 2014
Format: Hardcover | 352 pages
Monday, Monday follows three students caught up in the massacre: Shelly, who leaves her math class and walks directly into the path of the bullets, and two cousins, Wyatt and Jack, who heroically rush from their classrooms to help the victims. On this searing day, a relationship begins that will eventually entangle these three young people in a forbidden love affair, an illicit pregnancy, and a vow of secrecy that will span forty years. Reunited decades after the tragedy, they will be forced to confront the event that changed their lives and that has silently and persistently ruled the lives of their children.
With electrifying storytelling and the powerful sense of destiny found in Ann Patchett’s Bel Canto, and with the epic sweep of Jess Walter’s Beautiful Ruins, Elizabeth Crook’s Monday, Monday explores the ways in which we sustain ourselves and each other when the unthinkable happens. At its core, it is the story of a woman determined to make peace with herself, with the people she loves, and with a history that will not let her go. A humane treatment of a national tragedy, it marks a generous and thrilling new direction for a gifted American writer.
First Chapter, First Paragraph
1. THE TOWER
Shelly stared at the graph of imaginary numbers on the chalkboard, confounding figures represented by the letter i and less relevant to her life than fairies from her childhood or the vanishing rabbit in the magic show at the Student Union last week. The professor had the face of a cherub and arms too long for his squattish body, and was marking on the chalkboard as he spoke. “The square root of minus four,” he said, slashing the numbers onto the board, a ring of sweat under his arm, “is two i. Two i squared is negative four. That’s two times two is four—times i times i, which is negative one…” [1st chapter excerpt]

I would definitely keep reading although I now have the song ‘I don’t Like Mondays’ by The Boomtown Rats stuck in my head!

Same here, I now keep humming ‘I don’t like Mondays’ :). Very interesting topic and I would continue reading.

I hope that the book doesn’t just use something as tragic as a school shooting to start off the stereotypical romance plot, but thankfully it sounds like it is showing the consequences something like that has on a normal life! Thanks for hosting and for sharing 🙂 I hope you have a great week!

This sounds SO good! Is it nonfiction – or fiction based on a true crime? I’m adding it to my TBR list.

It’s historical fiction. The shooting at the University of Texas really happened but the story and the characters are fiction.

I tend to shy away from these kinds of books — it looks good, but I doubt I’d read it. Maybe because I live near college town?

I like the first paragraph, but the story sounds kind of sad and I don’t think I would be in the mood for it at this time.

I definitely want to keep reading, even though I know it will be sad…but suspenseful, too.

The opening doesn’t grab me, but the synopsis does, so I’d keep reading.

It’s a gripping start, but a gruesome subject. I read the entire first chapter (using your link). So I guess that means I would keep reading, but this isn’t a subject I enjoy reading about.

I just watched a report about a young survivor of the Columbine shooting and how he is making a documentary in an effort to heal. I think it is an important subject.to consider. I would keep reading.

I would definitely keep reading. The subject matter interests me, not to mention my being curious about how the author takes on such a relevant and emotional part of our history and applies it to her characters.

I remember the Charles Whitman event even though I was very young at the time. It was really shocking then, no one knew what to make of an act like that. I’d keep reading just because I know a bit of what comes later.

I love reading true crime stories, as a general rule. This crime, when I read about it, bothered me on a level that most do not. As I read about the students being shot, I felt an intense connection with the victims. I would love to read this book, even though I know it will be heart-breaking. I admire the author’s work; such research requires dedication. michelle_willms at yahoo dot com.
