Weekend Birding: A Few Winter Sparrows
When I mention sparrows most people think of the common backyard House Sparrow, a European species brought to New York in 1851, and not related to the native North American sparrows.
Here are a few of our native sparrows that were nice enough to pose for me last week. I see the White-throated Sparrow and American Tree Sparrow in the winter when they migrate to a warmer climate. The Song Sparrow is a year-round resident here.

There are quite a few. Over 400 species have been officially recorded in the state. I’ve only seen about a quarter of them.

They really blend in with their environment. I love the little spot of color on their heads.

I’ve to learn to ID the ‘common’ sparrow. I know there are various kinds, even just in my neck of the woods. Also, remember I mentioned to you about seeing the Red-Shafted and the Yellow-Shafted Northern Flicker together? Just posted the photos. Maybe you can help me out there.

It’s so cold here I don’t see a single bird. I hear them in my cedars, but darn if they’ll come out and pose for me. Clearly you’ve trained them well.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen those before. It makes me wonder what our local equivalent would be. They are very pretty!
Sorry I posted so late today, but my post is up now.
