Saturday Snapshot: Birds and The Bean

Thousands of Snowy Owls have migrated into the lower 48 states this winter. This is highly unusual and scientists speculate that they have come further south in search of food. There have been several sightings of them around the Chicago area and one of the locations was near Millenium Park close to the lakefront.

Since I was going to be in the city to meet a friend for lunch this past week I arrived an hour early, camera ready, in search of a Snowy Owl. Unfortunately I didn’t find one but I knew if I left my camera home there would be one perched on top a light pole or sitting at the lakefront. So instead, I did a little sightseeing photography.

This is a photo of Cloud Gate, a sculpture that sits on the plaza at Millenium Park and is more commonly known as The Bean. I got a nice shot of it with a reflection of the Chicago Skyline. The second shot shows the entire sculpture.

While I was wandering through the park I did see a few common birds like sparrows, chickadees, pigeons and gulls. I was surprised to see a few crows, a once common bird that have only recently begun to make a comeback in Illinois.

The crows were killed off in large numbers in 2002 from an outbreak of West Nile virus. This one was scavenging peanuts that people were throwing to the squirrels.

After lunch, on my way back to the train station, I walked along the Chicago River and saw pairs of Canada Geese congregating near the banks. One of them walked right up to me.

They are accustomed to people and are usually friendly unless it’s nesting season, then they will bite your hand off.

I’ll have a few more Chicago pictures next week.

What great photos — One place I haven’t been except for it’s major airport LOL

I was just watching something about the snowy owls on tv and thought it was fascinating. This global warming is affecting not only the weather but the wildlife as well.

    Have a great week Leslie

That “bean” is amazing…especially the first one with the skyline in it. I wondered…how did she get that “twisted skyline” shot? lol

    Love that goose!

    Thanks for sharing.

Fun and exercise too. I ended up walking 5 miles to the lakefront, the restaurant and back to the train. Phew.

What great pictures! That bean sculpture is pretty cool. Wasn’t it in a movie recently? Somehow it looks familiar . . .

I think there have been a few. I know Source Code had a scene towards the end where they walked through the park.

Leslie, I always love your photos. I’ve been to downtown Chicago, but haven’t seen “the bean”. Nice, nice, nice.

I’ve never seen anything quite like the bean. What a neat reflection.

Haha…I wonder if the creators cringe every time they hear it called “the bean” Cool photos.

You got that right! The sculptor called the nickname “completely stupid”. But the media calls it “The Bean” and the name stuck.

I love your photos of the Bean! I saw some birds of prey in our backyard yesterday and I was wishing you were here. I did get a shot of what I think is a buzzard with my phone that I may use for my Saturday Snapshot next week.

Love the pic of the Bean! I bet you can find some very cool vistas on that from different angles.

Geese are MEAN! We get a ton of them in the local park and I always see moms urging their kids to pet them. One of those kids is gonna lose a finger one of these days.

I’ve had geese hiss and snap at me but that was because they had a nest with eggs.

I love the reflection photo. I thought you’d used some sort of app or photoshop to make the picture look like that. Here’s Mine

I love that piece of art! The reflective surface would be fascinating from all angles I would think. I had no idea about the crows. We still have a bunch of them here in Oregon.

Great photos. I am not a fan of geese. They are nasty around here.

Thank you for these. I chuckled about your comment on the snowy owl because I know exactly what you mean – it’s just when I don’t have my camera that I see a whole slew of photogenic things!

I’ve never been to Chicago and had never heard of The Bean but it’s great – I like its curves. Strange – I’m not sure I really go for modern art but I do like non-representational sculpture.

    Beautiful pictures.

I always happen upon beautiful things, whether it’s architecture, scenes, or gorgeous skies, when I’m without my camera. And my phone camera just doesn’t cut it.

That bean is pretty awesome, especially in the pic where the skyline is reflected!

Love, love, love the Bean. That’s so cool. Awesome photos. Supposedly, we have snowy owls around here, too, this year, but I haven’t seen one yet.
