Stephen King Project 2012

When I saw that Natalie from Coffee and a Book Chick and Kathleen from Boarding in My Forties were hosting the Stephen King Project, I just had to sign up for one more challenge for 2012.

I have read a lot of Stephen King’s earlier books but not so much lately. Recently I read 11/22/63 and absolutely loved it. It reminded me why I enjoyed all those Stephen King books years ago. I just happen to have a few of his books waiting in my TBR pile, so this seemed like a perfect challenge for me, since I’m also trying to read from my shelves.

Overview

•  The challenge runs from January – December 2012.
•  Audiobooks, E-books and movies count.
•  The Project will be hosted at The Stephen King Project review site.

Commitment Levels

•  A King Novice: 1 book
•  A Lil Bit of King: 3 books
•  A King to Balance It All: 6 books
•  A King Legend: 9 books
•  A King for All Seasons: 12+ books

I’m going to commit to A Lil Bit of King: 3 books.

Tentative list:

• The Gunslinger – Dark Tower I
• Lisey’s Story
• Full Dark, No Stars

Not all of his books are scary. The first King book I read was Salem’s Lot, which was very creepy but the most recent, 11/22/63 was time travel and a great piece of historical fiction/alternate reality.

Leslie, I’m so excited that you’ll be joining! Ever since reading ‘Salem’s Lot and 11/22/63 recently, I knew I needed an excuse to continue to read Stephen King. I also have Full Dark, No Stars and have heard wonderful (and scary!) things about it. What I love about the SK I’ve experienced so far is that he’s not always about horror. It certainly was all horror with ‘Salem’s Lot, but I would say it was more the creepy aspect to it then just good ole blood and guts. But 11/22/63 was all time travel and absolutely no horror whatsoever and I loved that diversity. I also want to read “On Writing,” especially since I do love his Introductions and Afterwords for his books. He has such a genuine style to his writing and his characters are so believable. I know he has some bad ones out there, but for someone who has been publishing for more than forty years, that’s okay by me! I’ll just skip the known bad ones and run to the good 🙂

Welcome to The Project, Leslie! I can’t wait to read your reviews!

Thanks! Happy to join in. Stephen King has always been one of my favorites but I haven’t read much of his recent work… and I”m not really sure why. After reading 11/22/63 I remembered why I liked his books so much. And, despite many recommendations, I have never read The Tower series. So I definitely want to read the first one soon.

Good luck with the challenge. I’m seriously going to have to consider doing this one. I picked up 11/22/63 a while back and really want to get to it. Then I have a few others that are on my shelves and reader that I’d like to read. Hmmmmm, I said I wasn’t going to join many challenges but I feel my restraint breaking down. Lol.

I decided back in the 80s I think that Stephen King wasn’t for me- The Stand really did me in. I’ve been very intrigued by 11/22/63 though, and would actually like to give that a go.

11/22/63 is not horror in any way. It’s about a guy who tries to change the past. So I’d call it a little bit of time travel and some alternate history plus there is even an attempt at a romance. And wonderfully written. I keep recommending it to people and even bought it as a Christmas gift for my brother.

This is one that I’m not joining simply because there aren’t very many (almost no) Steve King books that I haven’t read, including his non-fiction, his Watchtower series, and his Richard Bachmann (sp?) titles.

Best of luck to you, though! (Have you read Under the Dome? It is fantastic!)

I haven’t read Under the Dome yet but it is one I want to read. I’ll add it to my tentative list, maybe I can get to the next level of the challenge.
