Wordless Wednesday: Heliopsis (Wildflower)

Almost Wordless: This is a Heliopsis Helianthoides also called False Sunflower. Another one of the wildflowers I put in the new garden last year. They have been blooming since July and are very low maintenance.

    Just lovely.
Why the “false” appellation? Because the middle looks different than a true sunflower?

It’s been years since I’ve taken a botany class but I can take a guess. Although both plants are in the Sunflower family, this one is a perennial (zone 4+) and a sunflower is an annual. This is a short, dainty plant with a mass of flowers instead of the single flower on a tall stalk.

I remember seeing these in profusion in the Rio Grande Valley when I was a child. My friends and I would grab them in handfuls and take them stuffed in a glass Coca Cola bottle. My mom had a collection of them on our kitchen window and would always look a little wary when I brought another one home. I didn’t realize it until later, but she had some pretty bad allergies. LOL
