Mailbox Monday ~ October 12th

CardinalMailboxAutumnWelcome to Mailbox Monday, created by Marcia of To Be Continued, a place where readers share the books that came in their mailbox during the last week.

After several years of being on tour with different blogs as the monthly host, the Mailbox Monday Blog is now the permanent home for the meme.

It has a been a bit slow here at Under My Apple Tree for the past month or so. Even my garden has suffered some neglect as I have taken on two foster birds and more work for the bird shelter, including being on the adoption committee and managing a facebook page for the shelter (likes are greatly appreciated) to increase awareness of birds needing new homes.

Plus, I’m helping to get my father-in-law’s home ready for sale. Fifty years of stuff is a lot to sort through – what to keep, what to sell, and a lot of junk! That is motivating me to clean out my own closets and attic and get rid of things I’m not using.

New Books

BooksOct13_174913

The Japanese Lover by Isabel Allende from Atria.
An exquisitely crafted love story and multi-generational epic that sweeps from San Francisco in the present-day to Poland and the United States during the Second World War.

Not Black and White by G.A. Beller from Tandem Literary.
A fictional account of many of the events that led to the meteoric rise of a local charismatic street politician to become America’s first African-American president, and the downfall and imprisonment of two consecutive governors in the State of Illinois, along with several of their most trusted advisors and cohorts.

How was your week?

I hope your foster birds are doing well. I really need to do a spring clean here too!

The birds are (were) chronic egg-layers, which is very unhealthy. Both have stopped laying and are gaining weight and doing much better here.

Oh, good luck with clearing out! I think the fear of having a hoard of stuff for others to deal with has me purging, too.

Enjoy your books….I’ve been ogling Not Black and White. Here are MY WEEKLY UPDATES

I now have a fear of someone having to clean out my stuff and saying . . . What was she thinking keeping all this crap!

You’re doing great work with those foster birds. I’m sure the shelter appreciates that. Looks like you got some great books, and I know I want to read that new Allende.

I would love to foster animals, but I get really attached and it’s so hard to let them go.
    Enjoy your books.

It’s very difficult to give them back, which is why I hesitated to do it. The two fosters are female budgies. Neither is tame – they run from people, and one is very old. They would both be difficult to place unless someone wanted a ‘cage’ bird. Most people want a pet, so I’ll probably keep them.
