Almost wordless: This is actually a moth that mimics a hummingbird. They are almost always in motion, making it difficult to see the detail on their wings; but this one had stopped for a rest.

I am definitely seeing more of these moths this year. It looks like you managed to find one at rest also (like I did a couple of weeks ago). Great detail in the photo!

I’ve tried to capture a shot of what I’ve called a “hummingbird moth”, but have never been able to achieve one that’s this clear. Well done!

one came to visit our flowers some time ago, I had to check what this was. it’s really amazing you managed to take this shot!
We have big drama here with sparrows now eating the thistles from our goldfinch feeder. they are not even supposed to be able to eat through the thing with their beaks, nor to hang on the mesh, but they sure do the rascals. it’s the first year ever we have this. Have you also noticed mutant sparrows around??

The sparrows in my yard eat almost anything except thistle and most of them don’t like safflower -though they will still go to the safflower feeder and throw the seed on the ground. They love suet and peanuts – they hang sideways on the peanut feeder like nuthatches. And they will empty the sunflower feeder in a day. So yeah, they can be a little frustrating.
I got lucky with the Clearwing. It stopped for a rest, otherwise I would never have been able to get such detail.

I once came across this creature in England, where I lived at the time. I check with the bird association whether it could really be a hummingbird (because that was what it looked like to me). They told me it was a moth – a bit disappointing but it was amazing to come across it in the first place!

I would have assumed he was a bee and run away before getting that shot! My body does not react well to bee stings.
