Wordless Wednesday: Mourning Cloak Butterfly
Almost wordless: One of the first butterflies we see in the spring in the northern parts of the country. They can tolerate cold weather. This one was lounging in the sun.

I want to say “he” beautiful, it’s beautiful, he would be because he’s basking, if it were a she, she’d probably be “doing ‘ something.

My butterfly knowledge is limited but I guessed male based on his behavior. He would sit in the sun for a few minutes folding and unfolding his wings, then move a few feet to another piece of ground and display again. Males defend a territory and attempt to attract females. Your right about the females – they are out scouting for plants on which to lay eggs.

I love this beautiful butterfly, as Mary commented, the edge of his wings just looks so much like lace and so very fragile.
Isn’t it strange just how differently people can see the same thing…. Whereas you know this lovely species as a ‘Mourning Cloak’, which has a slightly dark and sinister ring to it, here in Britain the almost identical species is known as ‘Camberwell Beauty’, which conjures up an entirely different perspective. Over here however, it would appear that the ‘Camberwell Beauty’ is only a migrant species and there is no evidence that it breeds here!

It;s a beauty! I saw just a couple of these last year, but in the summer. We had such a cold spring that nothing was moving at all, and it was a particularly bad butterfly year. I hope this year will be a lot better.
