Wordless Wednesday: What’s for Lunch?

Coopers Hawk

The Coopers Hawk has been a frequent visitor to my yard this winter. They will often hunt for food by watching the feeders for smaller birds. I took this through the glass door during Saturday’s snow storm. No birds were eaten.

Looks like he takes advantage of every opportunity he can – don’t blame him if food is in short supply!

Amazing to me how you capture all of these – you must have the “eyes of a hawk”:)

I count birds for Project FeederWatch on the weekend. I spend an hour or two observing and reporting the number of birds of each species that visit. I happened to be watching when he showed up. And then all the birds left!

I’ve been seeing a number of hawks on my walks, but I haven’t noticed any eying up my feeders. Great capture.

They will sometimes sit high up in a tree. If you notice a lack of birds at the feeder that could be why. A few years ago I had a Red-tailed Hawk that would sit at the top of my 100 foot tall Cottonwood tree just watching and waiting.

I’ve been thinking about the birds down here with the snow we’re getting now.

How special, a hawk in your own garden! I see them on lampposts near our ring road sometimes taking a break from hunting the fields.

I love the variety of birds you manage to photograph!

Until I volunteered for Project FeederWatch I didn’t realize how many different birds were in my own backyard. I’ve never made a list of which birds I’ve photographed, it’s just sort of in my head.
