Meet Charlie
Charlie is a 5-year old Peach Faced Lovebird that has joined my household. His previously owner could no longer care for him and he was left at a rescue facility.
For now, Charlie will have his photo taken while in his cage, or ‘home’ as I refer to it. It appears he has never been trained, or if he was he has been neglected and no longer has good social skills. He won’t perch on my hand and bites when I try to take him out of his cage. Hopefully I can change this behavior but with an older bird it will take time and patience. I suspect the biting may have something to do with why he was given up for adoption.

Charlie is gorgeous and I’m sure that with time he will learn to trust you and become synonymous with the first syllable of his species’ name!

They can be very loving birds when raised properly. This one is rather wild.

Beautiful Charlie! I hope he’ll settle in fast. I used to have a budgie and I think I started just putting my hand in/near its cage and when he got used to that, take it a little step further. You can’t hurry a bird or he’ll be scared of you forever. Good luck! Anyway, even if he doesn’t want to get close to you, you saved him from a worse fate!

I can put my hand in the cage now as long as my hand doesn’t approach him. If it does, he lunges and bites. I’m not trying to get him to perch on my finger for now… my hand is only offering good things like treats and food several times a day.

Charlie is a good boy when he’s just sitting in his cage, but I’d like him to be able to come out and have a little more fun and interact with the humans. But if not… at least he’s got a permanent home now.

Thank you for the link to Lara’s blog. I took a quick look and this is the kind of advice I need. I know a lot about wild birds and bird behavior, and I’ve had budgies from babies, but I have no experience with adopting an older bird, especially one that bites.

I thought Lovebirds were green and when I saw him at the shelter I asked what kind of bird he was. I’m not real good with identifying parrots… obviously!

He is beautiful. Hope you can take him in hand, so to speak. I thought of you this week when we were pondering the flocks of grackles filling our skies. Did you know a flock of grackles is called a plague of grackles? Here’s Mine

I didn’t know they were called a ‘plague’, but that is a very appropriate name. A plague of them can empty my feeders in less than half an hour!

He already had the name Charlie, and I like it because it could be a girl or a boy… we don’t know which it is. Unless of course the bird lays an egg.

Don’t know a thing about birds but I know what I like and that’s your bird, Charlie. I’m a bit partial to the name though, we have a beagle named Charlie. Anyhoo you’re a braver woman than me but he is so charming, I’m sure it will be worth the effort. Best of luck.

So many times when the topic of rescuing animals comes up, it’s usually about dogs or cats. It’s great to see that there are those out there who also care for the other animals that are neglected. He’s a beautiful bird, Leslie!

I didn’t know about this rescue group until I saw an article in the paper when they rescued 200+ birds from one house. I was going to adopt one of the wild cockatiels from that house but I got taken in by Charlie instead.
